Volume Computation of Archaeological Vessels

چکیده
At excavations a large number of sherds of archaeological pottery is found. Since the documentation and administration of these fragments represent a temporal and personnel effort, we construct a computer aided documentation system for archaeological fragments to form the basis for a subsequent semiautomatic classification and reconstruction. The main technical goal of this project is to perform an automated classification based on the profile section of the oriented object, which is the cross-section of the fragment in the direction of the rotational axis of symmetry. To achieve the profile, a 3d-representation of the object is necessary. The final aim is to provide a tool that helps archaeologists in their archivation process. This paper gives an overview about an automated archivation process and 3d-acquisition with respect to archaeological requirements.

متن کاملCombining Shape from Silhouette and Shape from Structured Light for Volume Estimation of Archaeological Vessels
An algorithm for the automatic construction of a 3d model of archaeological vessels using two different 3d algorithms is presented. In archeology the determination of the exact volume of arbitrary vessels is of importance since this provides information about the manufacturer and the usage of the vessel. To acquire the 3d shape of objects with handles is complicated, since occlusions of the obj...

متن کاملThe Second Season of the Archaeological Survey of the Qeshm Island, Iran
The second season of the archaeological survey of Qeshm Island was conducted during the winter of 2012, during which the team identified a total of 138 sites. The preliminary analysis of the ceramic assemblage from these sites suggests that 5 sites date to the 3rd millennium B.C.(Bronze Age) and represent the earliest in the directory. The remainder includes 3 Iron Age, 4 Achaemenid, 23 Parthia...
متن کاملAutomated 3d recording of archaeological pottery1
In archaeology the determination of the exact volume of arbitrary vessels is of importance since this provides information about the manufacturer and the usage of the vessel. The technique used for the 3d-acquisition is shape from silhouette. The major problem of the 3d surface reconstruction using a turntable is the varying resolution in direction to the camera due to the varying rotation of o...
